Encountering Mark
Encountering Mark is a series of three evenings where we shall explore the narrative and themes of Mark's Gospel. The sessions will be on Wednesday 9th, 16th, and 23rd November, at 7pm in the Den. Please bring a Bible, and try to have read Mark's Gospel before we start, preferably in one sitting if you can!
Mark's is reckoned to be the earliest of the four Gospels, presenting an urgent and vibrant account of the ministry of Jesus. It is particularly relevant for us as we approach a new year in the Lectionary (calender of readings), when in Year B we shall be focusing on Mark's Gospel.
"The Gospel of Mark deals with the great issues - life and death, good and evil, God and Satan, triumph and failure, human mortality and human destiny. It is not a simple story in which virtue easily triumphs over vice, nor is it a collection of moral instructions for life. The narrative offers not simple answers but tough challenges fraught with with irony and paradox: to be most important, one must be least; nothing is hidden except to become known; those who want to save their lives must lose them." (from 'Mark As Story' by Rhoads, Dewey and Michie).
